Ristorante San Marco - Canelli
Via Alba in Canelli is still like that; today like in those days you smell the vineyard behind the houses and the hill behind the limes trees fades into the colour of white grapes. Today like in that time there’s the restaurant San Marco. In the days of Pavese it was an old tavern whit stables, which took its name from a church in the neighbourhood. During the feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist the women living on the country farms and growing silkworms holding them in their bosom to keep them warm used to go there on a pilgrimage to pray for the silkworms forming cocoons. Today the old church has disappeared and the silkworms are no longer grown but the San Marco still welcomes you whit “the touch of wine dregs” of Moscato which blows among the lime-trees from time to time. And there are Mariuccia and Piercarlo who keep the great cookery tradition of this country alive whit discretion and perseverance, renewing it when necessary and sometimes rediscovering it under the veil of contaminations and oblivion.
